Toronto Transit Commission is a city-owned organization which runs the buses, streetcars and subways. Buses and streetcars run along major east-west and north-south streets, and connect to the city's subways and rapid transit lines to rapidly move passengers across the city. TTC also connects to Transit systems in other municipalities including York Region Transit (YRT) to the north of Toronto, their VIVA express routes, Mississauga and Brampton Transit - west of Toronto, routes that service Pearson International Airport, and Durham Region Transit - east of Toronto. To use transit you must pay a fare with exact change, tickets, bought in books of ten, or show a monthly bus pass.
Subway tickets can be bought form coin-operated dispensers on each platform. You should remember to validate tickets before boarding the LRT using the dispensers on the platforms.

Downtown Streetcar

The Weekly Pass holders do not have to pay any extra Zone Fares, when crossing municipal boundaries, but must pay the Downtown Express extra fare in cash. There is a $32 / week Downtown Express pass.

The $47.00 Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Weekly Pass is an accepted fare on all TTC, Mississauga, Brampton and York Region Transit routes, including service for persons with disabilities which are operated by these systems.

Tax Credit for Public Transit: There is a 15% Federal Tax Credit for Pass Purchasers, which covers the purchase of Monthly Metropass (Adult and Senior/Student), Weekly Pass (Adult and Senior/Student); and GTA Pass.

GTA Weekly Passes can be bought at the following TTC stations: Downsview, Wilson, Lawrence West, Union Station, Finch, Islington, Warden, Kennedy, Scarborough Centre, Don Mills and at various locations in Brampton, Mississauga and York Region.

Authorized Ticket Agents Tickets & Tokens are also available at over 1,200 Authorized Ticket Agents displaying the TTC Authorized Ticket Agent decal, in Toronto. For the locations of TTC Authorized Ticket Agents, call Customer Information at 416-393-INFO (4636) and select "0" for Operator Assisted Service - available from 8am to 6pm daily, except statutory holidays.

Hours of Service

GO Transit bus at Etobicoke North transit station In 2007, the PRESTO Fare Card was introduced on four Mississauga bus routes, two stations on the GO Transit Milton line and Union Station for both GO Transit and TTC. The PRESTO card acts like a prepaid debit card, handles fare computations and transfers for you, and can be re-loaded (even by automatic bank debit) when dropping to a pre-determined level. When the PRESTO Fare Card is transferred from the Ministry of Transportation/ GO Transit at some future point, Metrolinx will be responsible for the system that will allow riders to move from Oshawa to Hamilton using public transit fare with a single fare card. Buses and Streetcars: Most buses and streetcars start about 5:00am and run to about 1:30am weekdays, with reduced service on weekends. Buses and streetcars are equipped with route and destination information signs. Schedule information is posted at most major route intersections.
Subway/RT: On weekdays and Saturdays, trains run every few minutes from about 6:00am until 1:30am On Sundays, they run from about 9:00am to 1:30am.

Late-Night Service: There's a late-night service called the Blue Night Network. Buses and streetcars run on most major routes (transit stops are marked with a reflective blue band) every morning from about 1:30am to 5:00am Service is provided every 30 minutes or better. See map at

Lost & Found: The Lost Articles Office at the Bay Subway Station is open Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm or call 416-393-4636 and press 6.

Security and Safety

Passengers boarding a TTC bus RThe TTC by-law forbids certain activities, including smoking, committing a nuisance, loitering, soliciting.

Subway Trains have passenger assistance alarms which can be pressed to report accidents, fire, harassment, illness, passenger safety and vandalism. Trains also have an Emergency Stop Device at the end of the car, near the operator's cab… not to be used in tunnels.

Uniformed and plainclothes TTC Special Constables are sworn by the Toronto Police Service. Transit Special Constables have the same powers as a Police Officer to enforce the Criminal Code of Canada, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Trespass to Property Act, the Liquor License Act, and section 17 of the Mental Health Act on all TTC properties and vehicles.

Request Stop: Women travelling at night, between 9 pm and 5 am can request a stop between regular transit stops (provide the driver notice one stop ahead, subject to the driver having a safe place to stop)

Designated Waiting Areas: There are well-lit areas on each subway and Scarborough Rapid Transit (RT) platforms, with access to intercoms, closed circuit TV cameras, pay phones (911 calls are free) and a bench. This are is also where the guard's or driver's car stops when the trains stops on the platform

Access for Persons with Limited Mobility

Wheel-Trans provides door to door accessible transit service 7 days a week, weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. and weekends and holidays from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. within the City of Toronto. Regular TTC fares apply.

Registered Wheel-Trans customers, who have signed up for Callout, receive an automated phone call to confirm their travel date, scheduled pickup time, destination, expected drop-off time, company and vehicle type for all scheduled trips. These calls are the evening before trips prior to 9 am, or the morning of the planned trip. Sign up for Callout the next time you call Reservations at 416-393-4222.
