Toronto Home Neighborhoods: East York Neighbourhood
This community is affordable with easy access to downtown Toronto East York was originally home to workers at the local market gardens and brickyards, and after World War One was home to returning veterans and their families. East York was incorporated in 1924, and was amalgamated into Toronto in 1998.
East York is 15 minutes from downtown Toronto's via Bloor or the Don Valley Parkway. The community has lots of north-south buses along O'Connor Drive and Pape, Donlands, Coxwell, Mortimer, Cosburn and Lumsden Avenues to connect to subway stations on the Bloor-Danforth line.
The area is served by 8 elementary schools, 3 Catholic elementary schools, 2 high schools, and a library. University of Toronto is accessed via the Bloor-Danforth subway, and York University's Glendon Campus just north on Bayview Rd
There is lots of community shopping on important north-south roadways like (from west to east) Pape, Donlands, Greenwood, Coxwell, and Woodbine Avenues. Danforth Avenue ("The Danforth") has many stores, restaurants and entertainment venues, and a great selection of Greek fare.
The community has access to kilometres of paved recreational pathways heading along the West Don River and eat along Taylor Creek. To the east is the East York Community Centre with an indoor swimming pool, a gym, and 7 baseball diamonds. The community also has 3 running tracks, an outdoor ice rink, 2 sports fields, and a baseball diamond.
The Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum and Arts Centre is located off Pottery Road, with interpretive and cultural programs. The oldest house in the neighbourhood is the 1840 Taylor family homes at 20 Beechwood Cr (at O'Connor), also called the Ira Grafton Gage House.
East York's homes were built over a long span from the 1890s through to the 1960s, with a mix of detached and semi-detached 2-storey homes and bungalows, with a number of rental high-rise apartments concentrated along Cosburn Avenue, with good views of the Don Valley. Homes here are in the low to low-medium price range.
