The building was erected in the late 1800s, and since the 1950s, has been a theatre owned by the late "Honest" Ed Mirvish as home to production by the Poor Alex Theatre Company, and other Toronto theatre production companies. The intimate theatre has a seating capacity is 142.

A 2004 renovation of the air-conditioned main theatre also added a brand new 2nd floor fully licensed, air conditioned cabaret space. This intimate music, comedy and small theatre venue has a seating capacity of 110. These spaces are available for production rental.
